You need one that is about the same diameter as the stock generator. So it will sit down right on fan housing. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

I have a brand new alt here i may try to make work. when i got my air cooled i was oblivious to how generators work. I put my stereo, 2 subs and 2000 watt amp in the car and was rattling my neighbors windows........for about 20 mins. then my car wouldnt start. thats how i learned about generators. too funny |

In a word, no.
As stated above, you have an engine lid to contend with and a cradle that is integral to the fan housing so you're [ideally] limited to smaller units. The one in my baby is from a fork lift _________________ Toby http://www.aircoolednut.com/

I run without an engine cover and some decklid standoffs that I fabbed but i do understand the "cradle" area at the fan housing. For the most part i was wondering if the general mechanics of typical alternators would work in an air cooled which they do being yours is from a forklift. Thanks for the feedback. |

I'll have to add my thanks to you for that article as well....
My generator died Tuesday night on the way home from work so i'll be printing a copy and following your direction this weekend.
edit: did your alt come with a built in voltage regulator? If so, did you take the old voltage regulator out of your T3? _________________ 71 Squareback

Regulator is built-in so you simply bypass the stock unit. It's in my instructions
For other alternators please see the main page:
http://www.icbm.org/erkson/ttt/engine/generator.html
If anyone has success stories with some specifics then please email me. If it's good I'll add it to the page. _________________ Toby http://www.aircoolednut.com/

when i finaly carryout my alternator mounts and get some mill time ill post some pics. i forget who has the setup similar but another type 3 brother had a real trick adjustable mount setup on his type 3 made out of aluminum... it looked great... and i beleive he used an RX-7 3rd gen alternator 80 amp. which is what i have waiting to go in.

I have quite the intake setup and am running a bottle so getting as much forced air possible is key in maximizing h.p. I found that with the standoffs on or the decklid completely removed, having the engine cover on, it wasnt getting the vaccum draw into the intake area as thought. With the cover removed and the standoff gap it creates a vaccum of forced air. |

Why spend that kind of money, for no gain in current. 35amps, is 35amps. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey
