My bus is a 68 camper (Penthouse). When I bought my bus the PO broke a piece of my trannys bell housing where the left bottom motor mount is (probably from not supporting it when pulling the engine). I didnt notice when I bought the bus because if you tighten the other engine to tranny bolts first it slips right in place and doesnt even look cracked at all. What kind of metal is the tranny case made of? It looks like it could be a easy fix if it can be welded or will I have to find a new bellhousing? I want to fix this before I hit the road this spring, Thanks |

The trans is high in magnesium, weld if you dare. You may be able to do without one bolt if the other 3 are good, or find another bellhousing. If it's a 68 only trans with the ring of nuts around the output shafts you may have to find another similar trans. as most of that stuff doesn't interchange well, beware. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Welding magnesium is not advised. Once it lights on fire you will not be able to put it out. Water only feeds the fire. The preferred extinguisher is sand. _________________ Licensed Automotive Service Technician

If none of the mounting points are messed up than I wouldn't sweat it. I've had water cooled vws with chunks missing from the bell housing and never had a problem out of them. _________________ 1985 Westy
