Alright, so I'm rebuilding a single port engine, and I have a pair of distributors. Money is an issue, so I'd like to run what I have for now. I have a Bosch distributor with numbers 0 231 178 009 And one with the numbers 9 230 081 094. Of these two distributors, Which would be better for my initial setup? Any suggestion would be appreciated.

They are basically the same thing, the "094" is just a chrome 009...

That's what I thought. The 094 is in better shape (read: it's practically brand new) So If that's the case that's what I'll use. It'll be the only shiny/ clean part in the engine bay!

I just built a single port 1600 (stock) for my bug with a 30/31 carb and i started with an 009 and it had a flatspot, it stumbled and only got 23 mpg. I switched to an svda with the same results as the 009 and still 23mpg. I recently switched to a vacuum only distributor from a 69 bug and what a difference, no more flatspot/stumble, and I picked up 3 more mpg. There is a very interesting thread on the "late model" forums that deals with different carb/distributor combos and what works best. Good luck.
