I've done a search on this topic, and a few threads poped up, but nothing really concrete. I was just wondering how many of you are running a rack & pinion conversion, and if you could briefly describe which R&P you use, how the steering reacts/behaves, and if you could post a few pics!
Here are some that I found.

Aussieveedubbers.com has a thread in their tech FAQ forum that will explain why the setup in the top photo can not work properly. |

Thanks for the link. It was quite an interesting thread, and refering to the diagram with the two triangles, it makes sense. I have found a steering rack that I'm willing to try out.
I'm going to mount it as close to the beam as I can keeping tank clearance in mind. I'm having a double bag beam with shocktowers made, thus the reason I need to convert to R&P. So hopefully by mounting it close to the beam as possible, it'll maintain proper steering geometry. Hopefully that will also reduce bump steer.
These are the steering arms/tie rods that go with that rack. Seems like its going to work out. Only time will tell!
This rack combination is actually being used on a sweet custom front end for a type 1. Here is is:
Its a nice bolt-on setup. I realize that R&P steering was designed for this particular suspension design, however it should work well. As mentioned, only time will tell. |

As mentioned by R_Sunada, it is made by eyeball engineering. If you have any questions regarding this setup, you can email Bruce at [email protected]
He can answer any and all of your questions. I had a few questions myself regarding the R&P setup he was using, and he was very helpfull and forthcoming with sharing of information. |

That is actually a very nice setup. I clicked on the link you provided, however I had a tough time translatting! You wouldn't happen to know which R&P that is would you? |

I have searched and searched, but since this rack is from a VW which wasn't sold here in North America, at least not to my knowledge, I'm having a difficult time locating one for sale. It came on VW Polo Mk1,2,3, 86c, Derbis, and Audi 50s.
The best bet thus far is the R&P I posted pics of in my original post. Its from a VW Rabbit. It maintains equal length tie-rods, and can be mounted close to the beam, thus reducing bump steer. It should require minimal fabrication, and no holes in the body. Once my beam comes back from the fabricator, I'll take some pics of the R&P mocked up to it.
If anyone needs the part# for that particular R&P, and/or for the tie-rod arms, please let me know as I have both. As well as the U-Joint needed to mate to the R&P. (courtesy of Bruce @ Eyeball Engineering) |

Equal length means nothing when the tie rods are as short as what you have. Long tie rods are the answer, not short. The Polo rack gives you much longer tie rods, so you'll get much less bump steer than stock. Your Rabbit rack gives you worse bump steer than stock. _________________
