Getting down to the details.....anyone have pictures of an original exterior mirror? Does the mirror have a part number stamped on the ball as the later mirrors do? I am specifically interested in 55 BD, but interested in earlier examples as well.
Thanks....Douglas _________________ Transporter Restorations

No part #'s on the pin/base. I would take pictures of the ones I have, but I suck at zooming with a camera. _________________ ---

My NOS Barndoor mirror for my Deluxe was made by Freese, and has no logo or part numbers at all,the outer edge is very flat and I am told by all those that know the correct Barndoor parts, that this is the correct one!!!!
Also the mirror arm clamp is different to the later clamp,I think all Wolfsburg buses used the same clamp, they are alot sharper in the shape that goes onto the mirror arm....
I will dig it out and try and post some pics later.
Have posted some pics in the gallery but unsure how to link them to this thread.....

The mirror edge is different based on the originals I have seen that are known to be original, hopefully someone will post photos. There is no part #.
It's my understanding that at least all Wolfsburg Buses have mirrors with no part #. Possibly even later? Here's an NOS mirror I own but I don't believe it is Barndoor:

my old june '57 standard had the original mirror with no parts number. I believe that carried through '58 also.
the dome light lenses and ashtrays also have no VW logo or parts number on pressed bumper era buses. _________________ .

My '54 came with a VW stamped and numbered mirror...but I was told by "experts" that it was probably put on later. The clamp is the right BD shape and the mirror arm was original to the bus.
Looking through vintage photos it looks like there were quite a few different style mirrors put on, either at the factory, dealers, or by the owners. It looks like the mirror arm location was sometimes changed as well. Check this early photo and note the mirror arm location of the Continental bus:
When it comes to getting advise on these details, I use Ronald Reagans nuclear proliferation advice; "trust but verify". I think old photos are the best source and unfortunately you rarely see a close enough shot of the mirror to know the make for sure. |

What is the difference in clamps? I looked at 3 early number-free mirrors and they look the same. I am still searching for other clamps in my parts. Any photos of the early clamps? _________________ ---

If I can remember, I will take a picture. But they are bent differently? Bent in more. Kinda like Linda's booty? Does this make sense? |

Yo Doug! As far as I know, what Everett Barnes lll posted, those are BD clamps. Most unmolested BD's have those style of clamps. I saw a BD in Sweden and one in Poland, both wear beat down like Linda's Booty, but they both had the mirror arms, clamps and mirrors. Both had those clamps. And other og BD's have those clamps as well. But, you know how VW utilized what ever they had!!
Took me a few sessions to realize this is your new bus?? DDUURRR!!!!
Hope to see that mug on the road and not kept in the closet like allot of them are. |

I thought I would jump in here with some printed info.
The first 2 pics are from Happich catalogs. The first pic is from a 1953 catalog. Note there is no 'dome' shape to the back of the mirror.
The 2nd pic is from a 1956 catalog, note the newer shape.
The next pics are from a 1952 Frese catalog. The refer to the VW Transporter as a VW Schnell Laster.....don't know why they did that because the DKW was a Schnell-Laster.
Note they list the mirror diameter as 105mm, and the part number is different to the Frese part number on the box above.
The Frese catalog doesn't show any pics of this mirror.
I also have an NOS mirror, not sure what year it is though. No part numbers on it.
