Brake experts please weigh in... the lower price is tempting.

No doubt a vented rotor would cool better than stock. Not a big fan of cross drilled rotors. I believe to get the real mechanical advantage of better brakes you need to increase the rotor diameter. From reading the add, it appears to use the stock caliper and mounting with the same diameter disc as stock. I may have miss read it. Thank you for sharing though. |

It says they are bigger... just not as big as the big brake kits I'm guessing.

From ebay ad: They are slightly thicker and wider than the standard Vanagon rotors and come with new wheel bearings and new organic or ceramic brake pads. |

He should provide the actual diameter of the rotor for comparing brake upgrades. I don't know how much more diameter the stock caliper can take in it's stock location. Too much and the rotor will grind the caliper. |

For Syncro owners, you can get the parts for the Audi (David Marshall / Smallcar) Syncro kit for about that price. The cross drilled Zimmerman rotors are currently tough to find, so I went with plain old vented Brembos. Part numbers are all in David Marshall's original description.

Another alternative to big brakes is small wheels and tires. Think 1970's Austin Mini. _________________ '86 Syncro Westy SVX |

ventilated front rotors would be a great improvement for a stock van but ~$400 is alot of scratch for rotors&pads.
pads would have to be thinner than stock as the calipers have no place to go in either direction.
I'd pay ~$200ea for 2 sets but not $400 _________________

Please note that these are NOT vented. They are slotted, big difference. These rotors will have almost zero increase in resistance to brake fade due to overheating. |

Seller seems to be confusing slotted for vented. The photos clearly show a solid rotor, yet in the text he says vented. There is no way a thicker "vented" rotor would fit inside a stock caliper even with thinner pads.
So, basically he's selling drilled and slotted rotors and some pads for $375. _________________ Currently:

I love how everyone knows about what is delivered in this auction....
Do you own them?, because I do, both the 2wd and Syncro versions from this seller.
You Guys crack me up with all the speculating.
Par for the course around here.
I will share this...I DID NOT have to turn any of these rotors as I do with the solid cheap crap sold by the common Vanagon vendors.
Why does the pedal pulsate with my new brakes.....?
Answer, because the quality control of lower cost replacement parts suck! |

Be sure to price Powerslot rotors for a good comparison. |

Ya ever read TenCent's tagline?
If you have specific questions about a product, WTF would you post them here and not contact the seller/vendor directly?
Very entertaining and informative posts by those who have no direct experience with the named product.
Dont like my answer, buy the product and post your experience.
OP, buy them, you will like them. |

Hi! OP here... My TwoCents to TenCent's tagline:
I trust the forum members a lot. In contrast, I've run into nefarious eBay sellers that tell you what you want to hear just to sell junk or take your money and not deliver at all. So, I like to check for forum members experiences before dropping big $ on something. I didn't have any specific questions for the ebayer. I don't know enough about brakes to ask anything specific! Another reason to reach out here... to learn what types of questions to actually ask!

I'm glad a trusted forum member has them already! What were your experiences with:
1. Installation process on the 2WD?
- was it bolt-on or did you have to finagle something to make them fit?
2. How many miles are on them now and have you had to replace anything?
3. Just curious. What size tires do you have on your setup?
4. Do you drive mtn passes much in them or mostly flat?
thanks! _________________ '83.5 Westfalia Camper - SOLD

No different than stock for installation.
The Syncro has about 8k miles on them, the 2wd has 20k.
No issues, even wear and the drilling helps displace heat.
I do wash each set with water from a hose about every other week to make sure nothing is in the holes and keep brake dust off my rims.
I gave the pads away to another van own as I only use Pagid pads.
This seller had a Samba Classifieds ad at one time.
EBay has some junk, but these rotors are not.
Buy what you can afford and I would recommend being just are wary of Samba posters without any real experience with the item you are asking about.
The "opinions" they post lack empirical data.
Have a great day |

I am curious as to what problem you are trying to solve?
Better braking in town..? Or better braking on grades? With loads?
Ad says:
Quote: |
The front rotors on the Vanagons and Westfalia vans are anything but adequate when it comes to braking on steep downhill grades resulting in the brakes 'glazing' up, making stopping difficult and driving on steep mountain downhill grades - very dangerous. |
Please read up a bit on how much a rotor of this type will improve cooling on long braking.
My understanding (and experience) has been that drilled and slotted rotors may cool a little on short and hard braking.. like diving into a hairpin turn.. but they do not cool as well as vented disks on long mountain descents.
For long mountain descents you also want those rear brakes to do more work... I'd spend money on the rears, first. Tune them, space the shoes per posts on this board. Make sure they work as designed. (Many don't)
If you are still experiencing poor braking, maybe give these a try, but money on bigger VENTED rotors and more pad area is worth the extra a couple hundred, IMO. _________________ -89 GL Westy, SVX.. finally.
