Since My 74 didn't come with A/C, and I live in phoenix, What are my options for some cool air?

I know about a Thermador unit.

What else is there?

Is there like a kit that I could build myself?

bon2198,

Although I'd love to put in A/C, It would just kill my 1600. Since I've gotten it I use it to do some weekend travels.

One of them is to prescott, where my shop is.

It is 113miles away. Half of that is at my altitude 1600ft above sea level. Then for 8 miles I climb 4000ft to 5600ft above sea level where my little 1600hp at WOT only puts out like 41hp. The rest of the trip is at 5200 feet ASL. This is all at highway speeds at or above 65.

I'd like to keep the engine in one piece before i get a 2180.

I'm in Phoenix and Chino Valley. I had dealer-installed AC in my '70 bug, first with its 1600 SP engine and later with 1835 DP. With the 1835 DP the compressor load was negligible. Today's AC systems (iceac or Gilmore) use significantly less horsepower to drive them, use R134a, and will cost about $2K or more installed. My AC worked "OK" in Phoenix if one started out from a covered parking spot, not so good if VW was heated up by the sun. The AC was cold, but the fan didn't blow very strong in it. So don't even think about retrofitting with old used AC parts.

There was a company within a few years ago making new ones, but I can't find them online now. My bookmark died with my crashed hard drive.
I think it might have been classicaire.com, but there's no site there anymore. Perhaps out of business?

Some of the guys down here in the Phony are using break away front windshields -- just like on the old Ford Model A's

Very cool !

It has not been done with a curved windshield – yet !

Shoot, I live in Phoenix too. I drive my 72 Super 60 miles to and from work in this heat everyday! No A/C, no swamp cooler.... just good 'ol 2/45 ventilation (roll down 2 windows and drive 45mph). Oh... and drink LOTS of water! LOL!
