I use cableorganizer.com for all of my wire loom, loom connectors and other such items. I wasnt sure this would be cheaper but actually was and the fact they offer the t-connectors on the loom for the factory finished look. They offer other such items at ties, loom, heat shrink and other various electrical items. The best part is no minimum! |

Here is some other great solution for turn signals and lighting controllers....
Mostly for 2 wheelers but a lot will cross over to buggies and Bajas...
http://www.signaldynamics.com/index.htm
More specifically....

I just ordered a wiring harness for my buggy, I hope it'll work for me... Looks like the ones a lot of guys here are using. I know I'll need some ground wire for it, but, this is a pic of it.
What do you guy think? I priced out just the parts to make it & it was close but, worth the extra to have it all put together already, with labels & color coded...
Can you think of anything else I'll need besides extra ground wire?
Thanks,

I have used that exact harness several times. I like it. It certailny is not fully "complete", but its a good start.
In addition to the ground wires you will need the following:
1. Something to organize your grounds, be it a terminal strip, a buss bar, a couple of grounded bolts, whatever you choose.
2. A good amount of additional wire. Some examples of what I mean: See the short yellow wire? Thats your headlight feed. Thats it....nothing to get to the actual headlights, or the park lights (front & rear), license plate light, or the dash lights. Another thing is your brake lights. You have enough to get to the master cylinder, but not enough to get all the way back to the brake lights. Same for the blinkers. You have enough to run to the column, but not enough to run to all 4 blinkers.
3. You may need some additional relays, depending on how you wish to wire your car. You have 1 relay on the panel which works great for a negative triggered relay for the horn. Others use them for headlights. I also use one for the wipers and for the 4 way hazards.
4. I also make a modification to allow for 1 keyed and 1 constant hot when you are done with the basic wiring. The way it is now leaves you with two constant hots.
Here is a picture of mine installed in a Manx;
Oh yeah...you will also need connectors and shrink wrap. |

Thanks!
Right after I posted this, I remembered that there was another thread <~click to see it.] I posted in saying I wanted to use this same one... You actually replied to that thread with the same info! Thanks again!
I'll be looking into buying some more wire & can you recommend some relays? I'll be using them for the wipers, flashers, horn, & headlights. I've also got to buy some grounding bars, & connectors.... Plenty of connectors! I also want to make my dash connect with a plug, instead of having it all hard wired. My dash is one piece with my hood...
I should have searched first, but, at least the info is here for others if they need it.
I won't be ready to wire my buggy for a while, but, I was losing interest in the Buggy from everyone in my family being sick, doing inside house projects, & with this FREEZING weather we've had around here... SO, I bought the harness in hopes of sparking up my interest again. I just had a vacation from Dec. 23rd till today... I didn't get even one thing done in the garage the entire time I was off of work! I'm VERY disappointed in myself, but, I did get some house projects taken care of that I have been putting off for a while. _________________ ~X-Man~

UUse the block mounted relay for the horn (especially if you are using a VW column). Its really already perfectly set up for a negative trigger which you need for the horn.
Any standard Bosch style relay will work well for the wipers and lights. They are available on EBAY for cheap, or your local Radio Shack. Like this:
http://www.delcity.net/store/Relay-!-with-mounting-bracket/p_73576.a_1
For the wipers you want to make sure you get one that has one tab energized at rest for the autopark feature. Its not really required for the headlights, but the same relay will work just fine.
For the flashers you need a relay like this:
http://www.delcity.net/store/specialty-relays/p_791795.h_791800.a_1.t_1
This will keep your blinkers isolated. |

So This relay http://www.delcity.net/store/Relay-!-with-mounting-bracket/p_73576.a_1 is the one you recommend for the wipers, markers, & headlights & http://www.delcity.net/store/specialty-relays/p_791795.h_791800.a_1.t_1 this one for the blinkers, right?
I've never wired up relays or anything, just stereo systems, so, I'm not familiar with what you said here
"For the wipers you want to make sure you get one that has one tab energized at rest for the autopark feature. Its not really required for the headlights, but the same relay will work just fine."
How would I go about doing that? Would I be all set if I just get a relay like the one you posted above?
For the horn/column/turn signal, I have a '60's VW column, a '67 turn signal switch w/hi/low beam switch on it, & I'm planning on using a '73 collapsible shaft on it. I have a "Scat Europa" steering wheel to use on it. I'm not positive on how it'll all hook up, but, I believe the horn button has a clip on the back to hook the wire up to. I added the wire down the inside of the shaft already. But, there isn't anywhere else that takes a wire. I'm guessing it was grounded to the column? That's something I'll have to figure out still. Plenty of time before I plan on honking the horn! LOL!
Thanks,
I know I'll have more questions once i get ready to wire up the buggy, but, I want to get some of the stuff out of the way now, so, I'm ready to take on the wiring of the buggy. It's kind of daunting to say the least!

I would use the 73980 relay for your headlights and wipers.
Use the 73996 relay for your flashers.
You don't use a relay for your blinkers.

If you look at the "drawing" tab on the 73980 relay you will see that the 87a tab is energized at rest. This will work with your auto park feature on your wipers. The 87 tab gets energized when you flip your switch. One thing to remember is that this only gives you one speed on your wipers. Some people want enough to get past inspection, realizing they will rarely, if ever, need 2 speed wipers on a buggy. If you use a true wiper switch then you will not need a relay. This is simply the way I do it in order to use a simple toggle on/off switch. Its nice if you want consistency in your switches. You may not.
Does your '60s column have a small tab on the end near the box? If it does, the small wire pulls a ground from the steering box (at the donut) and sends it up the wire to the horn button. When you press the horn it sends the ground into the shaft, and into the column. The small tab on the end then brings that signal to the small ground wire that you see on your fuse block. That activates the relay sending power out the wire that I think is marked "fuel pump" on the harness. You would hook that to the horn.
The stalk mounted hi/low beam changer will require a VW relay to function. |

Also if you need some wiring diagrams, schematics on relays and lots of pictures and graphics on general electrical stuff. I just put up a lot (about 200) on my site...
http://www.mydune-buggy.com/gallery/index.php
Use SEARCH feature for keywords like: relay, diagram, chart, switch, light, turn signal, flasher and a few others....
