Now that I have pulled out my whole stack of 16" rims (and noted must are bent in one way or another) I am looking into rim straightening and shops that do it. I thought I would ask if people had experience with these kinds of wheel shops.
A quick search around here find a bunch (this is pothole country after all...) but they all seem to specialize in alloy wheels and quote $100-$200 a rim.
I want to bring them freshly blasted 16s and have them true them, that is all.
Experiences? Prices? I know in some cases its not all that hard to do yourself, but I have seen them use those big rim edge "pliers" and is a shop were reasonable, I would just drop off a whole stack.. _________________ John Henry

John,
I'd call this place, this is who I believe was the guy that widened my stock 16's on my old split...it's been a long time and he was about a 100yrs old then, but if he's in business still this is the old timer you want. He's about 45 miles south of me so if you need drop off and delievery you know I'm willing to help you out.

You might look for an old tire shop in your area. I have had several trued and the tire shop usually charges me $25 a wheel, unless its aluminum and they charge me $35 a wheel. |

i use to work at a tire shop and did this all the time with a 3 to 5 lb hammer. take your worst one and try it. lay it flat on concrete and work it back into a round shape. just hit it and let it fly and keep doing that or you could stand on the wheel to hold it down but be carfull not to hit your leg. |

John , I also am looking to get some 16" rims straightened and trued , and emailed [email protected] . I didn't get an answer , but they are in MA , have a nice website but probably are more likely to answer a phone call . I'm on Long Island , and don't want to deal with someone if I can't get to see their operation ( the " hammer method " is not what I'm looking for ! ) . Gene |

I e-mailed them too, and 2 others in the area. One relied and asked for a pic of a wheel so I sent them one. Of course they said it would not fit on their machine (I told them that sometimes you can use an old brake drum as an adapter, but they said it would still not work). One of the shops is only about 15 mins from me, so I might stop by.
Eric, thanks for your offer to help, shuffles rims, but I really don't want to ship them. I was just looking for peoples experiences, what kind of shops, prices, etc.
I suspect most shops just trash bent steel rims. I got a set of snows mounted on black steel rims from TireRack a few years back. I think the rims were $24 each.............. _________________ John Henry

Thats nice if all you have is a bent lip. But usually with a bent lip (curb contact) comes and off center hub. Ie the enter of the wheel is not in line with the outer portion of the wheel, and so the wheel wobbles. You can feel it in the car, and it looks horrible at low speeds. Not to mention the wear on the rest of the car. _________________ Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.

John , Please post the results of your rim straightening , I have a pair of 16" rims that were on my '50 Beetle when it was hit sideways and shoved into a curb . I KNOW that they are bent off center , not just the edge of the rim . Thanks , Gene |
