Price would be around $150 each. I need one and I'm sure the ATL crew will take a few _________________ If the RV Hut is a rockin, don't come a knockn'

Talk to Pedro before you buy so you know what it takes to make it fit right. It took him about 5 hours of work to modify it but he's in another league when it comes to details _________________ '68 Lotus White T34 automatic sunroof

Yep my brother bought one for his notch and the fit is way way way off so much so he's not going to bother trying to make it fit (the piece that going on top of the lid is short/to small and the outter(big piece) is way to big (goes inside the seal area) and would need a lot of trimming/reshaping
And if I remember right it's made out of a plywood type material unlike the original
Long story short he is very disappointed for the time it took to receive it and the money he spent for such a poorly fitting piece
Just an FYI _________________ Wow look at that THAT'S A "SHOW CAR"!!

I saw this a while back. I just wondered. Trying to remember my engine lid liner from a long time back.
It notes "decals already attached". From my memory the open/closed directions were not decals...they were screen printed from what I remember.
Please correct me if I am wrong. Ray |

I made my own using some roofing felt and some roofing paper. I painted it with some tan/camo plasti-dip paint. I followed Thom's thread about it and just kind went with it.
It came out pretty good. It could use some final details and the decals, but it's pretty close to the original and isn't plywood. _________________ 1963 Notchback - Ruby Red

Original are not decals, I have never seen that ever.
Screen printed or similar. _________________ How to Post Photos

Thats what I thought. Being an industrial screen printer.....I thought that at the most exotic they "might" be water slide decals....because sometimes the surface of the graphic tended to crack a little.......which would be a tremendous, redundant waste of energy......since water slide decals are generally screen printed in the first place (these days some are also pad printed and some are inkjet printed and some are offset litho printed.....but most are still screen printed)
These panels easily lend themselves to direct screen printing. Dirt cheap, fast, accurate. Probably printed with a polymer enamel just like waterslide decals.
Personally.....as cheap as screen printing is......I would never pay even remotely that much for an engine compartment panel with decals on it. Even the best decals on that material with heat will start getting gummy edges and gather dirt.....and look like ass shortly.
Damn.....if a group had panels.....and wanted to pay for the image film (I can get a medium resolution film from my contacts for maybe $50)......I would print them for maybe $2 each if I could get them all done at once. Ray |

That's kinda cool
Other than yours have you ever seen purple ?
Maybe the black ink was low/running out so it produced purple ? _________________ Wow look at that THAT'S A "SHOW CAR"!!

Do you think it was the auf gassing that's different? Ev's car is obviously very OG but so was mine and they look very different. But a square would have rubber and theoretically a bunch of junk thrown in the trunk, where the notch would just have the snap vinyl cover and maybe some luggage every once in a while.
just age and heat cycles? _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |

The early one is embossed . This would be very easy and dirt cheap to do. Its done with a simple brass or steel, etched embossing die that is simply bolted to the steel rule die that cuts out the pane.
The sheet of raw material is passed under a weighted roller with the steel rule die board on top. It crushes the panel between the die board and platen......cutting the perimeter shape, holes and embossing the text all in one shot. It takes about 10 seconds per part or less...the steel rule die and embossing die at that size costs about $300 in todays costs.....and can make about 50,000 parts or so before it needs ro be re-ruled for about $175.
I have made tens of thousands of similar parts the same way. VW dooor panels with heat embossed lines are made the same way with a die that has electrically heated rule lines.
That type of die costs maybe $500- $750 in todays dollars. Ray |
