|
|
Sorry for the long story but trying to give all the details (which I'm sure I left something out)
Just picked up a 70 B-Window about a month ago for my pops and have been trying to work out all the kinks for him.
He finally came up to visit over the weekend (1st time seeing the bus)
So we take off to grab dinner to bring back to the house. On the way there it was difficult shifting into 1st & 2nd. We pulled into a gas station right there near the restaurant. I adjusted the clutch cable, shifts fine now (grab dinner) then leaving the parking lot and POP!! the clutch cable snaps.
I tried loosing the cable to re-attach so we could try to get back home with no luck (not long enough)
So we thought if he holds/pulls the cable he could act as the clutch but when he/we tried pulling the cable to engage we were unable to shift into any gears unless we turned the Bus off (then shifts fine into all gears).
So does it sound like something else has gone out?
Why were we unable to shift when we were pulling the cable to engage?
I even crawled under the Bus to make sure when we were pulling that it was fulling engaging?!?!?!
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks |

You can't pull on a clutch cable hard enough to engage the clutch. You could have just driven home without using the clutch.....Replace the clutch cable, get yourself a new wingnut and clevis pin while you're at it, and you'll be fine. |

Yup, like VDubTech says, you can drive without the clutch... when you get your clutch cable replaced (and PLENTY greased up, don't forget), practice a little for fun and for the next time your clutch cable breaks...
To start, engine off, put bus in 1st. Crank and let it jump forward till it's rolling. Then there is a certain speed/revs for each gear where they will slip effortlessly into and out of the gears. Roughly 10mph, shift to second; 20 mph to third. You won't need more than that. Downshifting blip the throttle a touch as you shift. Stop light, just turn the key off. Green light, repeat from the top! It's really easy once you get the feel for it. _________________ Cheers,

when I was underneath the bus it felt like I could move the linkage (where the cable mounts to the tranny) as far as it would go, then had pops pull the cable also to double check the linkage was moving all of the way.
So your'e saying that's not possible?

Bad things could have happened in the bellhousing too, a broken release fork, throwout bearing off the fork or bad pressure plate could cause similar symptoms. Do the cable first as it doesn't require an engine drop. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
