Good afternoon,

In a prior post I mentioned that the pistons in my 87 VW vanagon GL 'seem' to have an "SK" marking, where the K is overlying the S (or vice versa if you prefer). It's tough to see right now due to the varnishing. However, a search on pistons yielded the following url:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=327436&highlight=brazilian+piston+cylinder

I will say that my reman'd block 'seemed' to have reman'd heads and some water jacket work (looked very much like JB wield had been put in to repair some pitting).

If the pistons are not OEM, this would likely mean that they have the 1mm deficiency from crown of piston to center of wrist pin. If this is the case, I suppose, too, that it could be the case that the reman'r of the engine (I believe it was reman'd in Canada) took 1mm off the sealing surface of the water jacket and spigot side of the cylinder to right the wrong? I have no real basis to deduce this other than it seems feasible.

However, if this was something that was 'standard' to rebuilds during this era (around 2000), it would be mandatory to determine this in order to ensure proper fit and seating of replacement parts. This seems like it could be a huge error if missed.

Comments appreciated - thanks.

Your pistons are Kolbenschmidt.

You should have kept this on your other thread.

Milling of water jackets is possible, but I know of no one who has done it (except Rocky, who mills them right off!). That is definitely not a routine way to address the low-comp-height issue of some of the aftermarket pistons.

The point being moot, of course, because you have OEM pistons.

Appreciate the information everyone. it's a huge help and relief.

Will send the pistons/cylinders to Rimco for eval.

I'll keep the posts more orderly in the future. The topics should have probably been broken into individual posts from the start for ease of future searching and reference.

Thanks again,

Rich
