This is opinion based...
Many people think you should not try to make a late bug look early..
So far it's about 50/50 but those that I have talked to about me wanting to put 65 fenders on it, say leave it alone or buy a older one..
Ok i get that but I don't own a old one so why not just convert it somewhat..The car is not mine, I bought it for my oldest boy and I to fix it up for his 1st car. After going to a show a few weeks back he said he liked the 71 rear taillights and the 65 front end with the blade bumpers. So off we go..Picked up a set of 71 rears and a couple 65 fronts but even the guy I bought the 65 fenders from was a dick about it..Don't put these on a 73..
Ok wtf is what I was thinking but whatever..
Why are so many against this..Do you think your older bug is a special one? Its not!!! There are millions of these things all over the world and quite honestly maybe only less than 2-5% of them are some special rare model..worth putting a ton of cash at them..
Ok before you bash up on me 2 much this is opinion based and by no means is fact so.....It is his car and definately not rare so why not,Right
Here it is 4 days ago..

Here is my 2 cents. Do with it as YOU please. Its going to be your, well his car and if that is how he would like it, then by all means do it that way.
Me personally I LOVE to see how everyone Unique-wi-fies their beetles (yes that is my own word, in my own personal dictionary!) hehe |

I'm not a big fan of "early look" cars because folks usually half ass them.
If you want to run "early look" you need replace:
the fenders, aprons, bumper supports, bumpers, side & hood trim, mirrors, front hood, and deck lid with '65 - '66 items.
You also need to caps the crescents.
real '66 & '65
'64 & earlier have smaller windows harder to fake
or except the fatness as a good thing.

I do respect vintage cars that have been restored but for our family..we are all hotrodders, born and breed.
unique, performance and last is comfort

fat chick is just slang for a late model
i say build it the way your son wants. the time spent with him is worth more then what other people think of the car. _________________ 68 bug 1600sp 30/31

Early look, late look it's all good. Unless you have a super (which you don't) in that case you should either embrace that fatness or go full out custom. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=366056 - My '73 Super Build. 2332cc, 16" Fuchs |

Like said before, It's his car and let him do what he wants. As long as the owner is happy, that is all that matters. Nuff said. But on a personal note, If you like the look of the early cars, get an early car. Once you go early you never look back IMHO. Fat chicks are like mopeds, fun till your buddies see ya. Anyway, in a way, older bugs are safer, a little. So for a young driver it would be better.

I put early bumpers on my '73, but mostly because it had early euro blades on it, and i liked the '67 bumpers better and got them for a swap. I think it looks good. But i am a newb. |

I wouldn't make any permanent changes to the car and I'd save all the parts. You're eliminating a % of VW people that might buy the car if you should one day want to sell. I'm speaking for myself, but I'm sure I'm not the only one that wouldn't touch a frankenbug unless all the parts are there to bring it back to stock.
Otherwise, have fun! |

Its funny only the early guys get testy about hanging early parts on a fatty...fat chick owners, secure in their manhood, are comfortable with what ever changes are made and share that special bond from being the ubermensch of vw society...that their women are prettier, children smarter and beer is colder are just a few of their wonderful qualities...let those who differ rise up and meet us on the fatside, and we will all be brothers... |
