Corvair engine huh? They never appealed to me, especially the way they run the fanbelt, thats got to be the wierdest belt setup I've ever seen. Parts are going to be fun to find also. Of course that JMHO. Go luck with the swap!

lol its not about popularity, its about spending a couple grand on putting an engine in a car with no more power then a slightly built vw, but with little/no aftermarket support. but w/e to each their own.

I drove a Corvair van for 9 years. As crazy as the belt system was, I had one fan belt failure in all that time. I carried a spare and replaced it at the side of the freeway.

Proper adjustment and making sure the belt does not get old and cracked is the key. Mine was old and cracked when it broke.

The original TransVair kit from Hadley Engineering allowed the installation of a Corvair engine, transmission, axles and rear brakes into a Volkswagen Type 1 chassis.

I almost bought a Baja Bug with that kit installed years ago. It had been parked for a few years and I was unable to get it to start. If it started, I would have bought it.

I used to have a 140 spider in the back of a rail. One thing I can say about those engines is they are really heavy and drastically changes how the car handles. They are also no easy to get parts for.

Corvair engines hold a lot of potential for a VW, but like most people have mentioned its not a real popular conversion any more. reason being that parts are getting harder to find, and its a different ball game than what most people are used to. so if your here asking questions on where to get the kit parts and such don't be hurt if we cant help you. this stuff is vintage speed not what most on the samba are used to or educated about.

i drove a corvair rail with the corvair power glide and it kicked serious ass. power was great, torque was great, throttle response, and being able to do 120mph on a dry lake bed was quite an experience.

Steve McQueen seemed to like his

Link

as for the belt thing, don't worry about it. a few vintage Porsches run the belts like that and there has never been a problem.

so in short if your looking for a cheap easy fix for your car, this is not it. if you looking for sweet vintage speed items that will let you keep up with some of the larger displacement engines and maybe a few water pumpers. your looking in the right place.

what ever you end up doing make sure you keep us updated, and make sure you post pictures. we love pictures . . . . Very Happy

i can't find the link now, but there was this one site shwoing how you can rebuild a corvair motor, using aftermarket VW 94mm pistons and cylinders, to make it a 3.2 liter. If i find the link, i'll post it
