Ha! I am guessing it was a prank or publicity photo, especially given that license plate. I'm not sure when in 1972 California had those "vanity plates".
These were about the size of the original Mini, shockingly small to most Americans at the time. So these novelty photos were common, such as parallel parking two in one spot, etc.
They came out prior to the first oil price shock, and became good as gold when that happened!

I challenge you to find an old man that can get into one of those micro-cars ... and then get out of it after shoe-horning it into the shopping cart corral.
Looks like the work of a younger, more agile jackass to me.

Even a young jackass probably had to go out the rear hatch!

I can see that being a joke photo. Maybe they pushed it in there.
I guess it depends on what defines old but I think I could squeeze in there.
It's hard to tell the exact clearance but there's definitely more space on the left side.

My Father used to have one of those dodge camper vans. He gutted the interior and used it for work and swap meets. It was better than most things we slept in a swap meets. You can stand up and stretch. He called it the Conestoga Wagon.
