Hi Samba,
I am installing a glowshift oil pressure gauge in my 1987 vanagon camper. The gauge kit came with a harness to connect the gauge to the sender - but it is too short to reach all the way back to the engine compartment. The harness has 3 wires. I see where i could splice in a length of wire(s) to give me additional footage - has any else done this? I have a request into glowshift to see if that have a longer harness(doubt it).

thanks,
Kevin

Yes GlowShift has longer cables. I used an 18 ft. to install my oil pressure gauge. $13 from Amazon.

Extra wire, solder and heat shrink sleave is all that you need to extend the wire. Most auto parts stores or hardware store will have what you need.

I suggest you just cut the plug ends off a 3-conductor outdoor extension cord.

You’ll only have one cord to string and it includes a layer of weatherproof sheathing.

Cool

Dimmer gauge light from headlight switch, ground anywhere under dash or brown ground wire.Extend the signal wire from sender with appropriate gauge wire.

I decided to go with the glowshift 'Extended Length 18' Pressure Gauge Sensor Harness"(SKU: GS-C-7-SH-06-1Cool. The glowshift gauge and sender use a 3 wire connector - so you'd have to splice all three. I suspect they run a ground wire to not rely on the sender be well grounded. Since the wires will be running outside the vehicle, it seems the less connectors the better plus it was only $13!

Some gages are supposed to have the ground wire be near the sender as the sender compares the ground signal from that wire to that of the sender resistance, with the sender being grounded. In that case having both grounds at the same location assures the same reference ground, thus assuring accuracy of the gage. Consider if one uses say a headlight ground lug as the ground reference,, with the sender grounded to the engine case. the engine case may well be at a different potential than that headlamp ground lug when the headlamps are on, and thus the gage accuracy will get all screwed up. This is why many times it is best to locate the reference ground wire close to the grounded sender.

I didn't like any of the current mounting ideas. So I made a gauge pod using standard 2in PVC drain pipe. Turns out the glowshift 2 1/16 inch gauge are a perfect friction fit. The mounting leg is a 1/2 cut pipe glued onto the bottom of the gauge pipes. I found a desk? 'grommet' that fits perfectly into the back of the pipe to seal off the gauge pipe. Still playing with height, but this location works well - angled to the driver and not blocking any of the current dash; included that stupid clock.
