Seems like it would be alright to install an isolator under the van.
I guess as long as you don't drive through high waters or what not.
Anybody ever install one underneath? _________________ "Saying what we think gives us a wider conversational range than saying what we know."

The type that runs off the alternator I see installed in the engine bay frequently, but haven't seen one underneath. But why not? _________________ Shop for unique and useful Vanagon accessories at the Vanistan shop:

That's exactly what I'm thinking.
Sure would make the aux circuit easier to wire if you were to put the isolator under the van, maybe between the front seat pedestals.
Main battery wire already there running to the alternator.
Half the work already done.

My only thought is that it is subject to far more abuse under the van, and if the circuits ever need servicing, access can be an issue. As another thought, place it on the side of the sink cabinet behind the driver's seat. I've got all my electrical stuff located there. It's easily accessible, doesn't take up valuable cabinet space, and it's entirely out of the way. I've got a Yandina, extra 12v socket, inverter, some switches, and an additional fuse block that all fit nicely.
A bad shot of it all:
