Maybe here You could tell Me what wrong with My oval. A VIN number says that a bug is from '55 but something with body number is wrong. It's 73 335. Is it good?

I think your body number is missing the 3rd digit. Mine is a March 55 and it's number is 736221, the body numbers stamped under the VIN plate weren't associated with the VIN numbers at the factory, although they tend to be in relative sequence also.

I think I know how it is. Cause between Jul-AUG '55 there changed the body clasification number from '8' (ex 800 001) to '0' (ex 030 001). And in My case is 073 335 so on body of My bug they put 73 335 without "0" Smile

Good deduction.

I'm missing the body number from my December 55 Kabriolet. Is there any way of finding out what it should be? I've tried to get a birth certificate but the micro fiche gave out whilst they were researching it so that wasn't possible. The only way I can see of getting close is extrapolating from other people's cars given their build date and chassis and body numbers.

Has anyone got any other suggestions please?

Cheers,

Dave

Body number 73 335 was assembled in October 1955 for a 1956 model year VW.

The body numbers were reset to 1 in July 1955, as nearly every structural panel on a 1956 model year Beetle was produced with new or recent stamping dies; completing a major retooling effort that started with the Zwitters, as the old dies and presses had simply worn out.

The new tooling eliminated the need for many of the reinforcing plates and gussets found on 1954 and 1955 model year VW bodies.
