I just finished a screen replacement on my '87. I used info obtained on this site plus the link to 'fanchers' mentioned above. I'm quite pleased with the result. It looks great and I'm no longer embarrassed to pop the top.
Like anything else, you do things once and for the first time it takes longer than you think it will. It would have been easier in parts to have a second pair of hands. Screen, edge binding and Speed Sew glue obtained from the local tent and awning retailer. Total cost no more than $25 in materials.

My pop top screen is starting to get alot of small tears in it, so it's
time to replace it. Went to the local Jo Ann fabrics yesterday and
bought a yard (sq) of polyester black screen and some gray hem
tape.
Pinned the screen up to the original screen on the inside and very
carefully cut out my new replacement. I had to trim up the new one
but it is pretty much spot on for the same size and shape. The only
really hard part was since I was doing this from the inside. I did not
have the bottom of the new screen exactly where the old one is on the
front of the pop top. I just measured down from the privacy curtain
to the bottom seam and came up with 21"s. Then I measured my new
screen from the nottom of the fabric as to get both sides square and
marked it with a flouresent marker and made a straight cut.
Took my new screen to the kids sewing machine and sewed on the
hem tape. After the sewing was done I took the screen out to the Westy
and used Franchers directions to line it up to the old hem and attached
it using small binder clips just as a dry fit, no glue yet.
I want to try the glue out on another couple pieces of fabric to see how
long it takes to set up and dry, before I try it out on the Westy. The total
cost for material was around $14, $10 for the screen and $4 for the glue.
I think that the Franchers replacement kit looks really good as does all
the other fine products they make and I'd like to thank them for the
excellant directions on how to install their screen. It's a big help for us
do it yourselfers.
For those not wanting to make their own, I'd recommend the Franchers'
Kit, if it's anything like my Sunshade from them it's top notch!!

I also have a 1987 Vanagon and just recenty repaired my ragged, and torn screen with one of the Kits sold here by
http://fanchers.com/223/Screen%20Replacement.htm
He also has a ad in the Samba forsale section, just do a vanagon sceen search and the repacement screen kit will showup.
It was very easy to install and everyting came together in a kit. No running around searching for what store sells what item etc. I prolonged the replacement of my screen to long in fear that it was going to be a difficult replacement, also untill recently the eariler Vanagons had no replacement screens avalable so our only choice was eitheir make something your self, or replace your complete canvas poptop. Ths is a great replacement screen made by a real professional trust me you won't be disapointed. |

Got my new homemade screen in yesterday and the old one cut out.
It looks fine though it's not exactly centered as I'd hoped but it was
a DIY job. The old one was really getting worn out with many rips
and holes. Hopfully the new one will last. The only concern I have
with the new one is how it will stand up to the top being down for
periods of time. If it doesn't I'll just make a different one out of
some other material.
Here are some pics of the job. Franchers directions are rate on the $$.
Starting with the right seem to break so the new screen will fit.
Next was a dry fit to get the screen centered as best as I could.
Once it was in place I glued 5"s at a time replacing the binder clips
and pressing the two seems together. I used a liquid stitch glue and
it set up fast but the direction say to let dry for 24 hours.
By breaking the lower inner stiches of the screen allows the new one
to fit inside the outer part of the pop top. Though mine was square I
did not get it completely where I would liked it to be but that's ok.
Maybe an extra person helping would have changed the results.
The lower right side is up about a half inch but still works.
You can see that there is a little of the old screen showing, maybe if I made
the new one 21 1/2" in height it wouls have covered it.
To remove the old screen I used the same seem ripping tool as in the
pics. Alot safer than a razor blade and easier to manage than sissors. _________________ '15 Audi A3 Quattro

You may also find this article helpful:

You’re essentially removing the old screen from its zipper ‘frame’ and stitching new screen into it, then trimming the excess. Should get you several more years’ of use! _________________ Camp Westfalia
