Noticed that my distributor clamp is loose, and the distributor can freely move around. I think it happened when I removed the engine last week, so it hasn't run or anything. The timing has to be adjusted now right? Also, how do I simply remove the distributor? The area could use a cleaning.
I'm not very familiar with the connection between the base of the distributor and the engine since I have never removed it. |

Just pull it out, but remember which way its pointing so its easy to time when you put it back in. I usually make a tick mark on the shaft and the case. |

Spray degreaser and clean it around the base before you remove it so dirt does not fall down the hole.
Get the engine at #1 TDC so the rotor should be pointing at the notch in the rim of the distributor. Be sure the rotor points there when you put the distributor back.
Then remove the one nut that holds the clamp to the engine case and pull out the distributor. Normally if your timing is right you can pull the distributor this way without disturbing the timing but your clamp was loose anyway. Plug the hole in the case!
You can turn it upside down and flush it with electrical spray and then regrease it. If you flush it below the points plate you will need to partially disassemble it to lube the mechanical advance.
If you do take it apart you need a clean surface, good light and electrical spray cleaner. I work on a large art pad and tear off pages as they get dirty.
