I see these options alot when looking at crankshafts. What's the difference and why?

Chevy rod journals are smaller, so less clearancing is involved.

Use VW journals for 78mm and smaller cranks. Use Chevy journals for 82mm and larger.

No hard and fast rule to it, Dave. I have a VW 82 crank with stock rods and one of those pre-clearanced cases, it dropped right in with plenty of room to spare. Personally, I'd rather have the additional journal overlap on the longer cranks, it adds life.

I also have an 82mm crank and pre-clearanced case with stock clearanced rods, but I still had to clearance the cam.
Probably wouldn't have had to clearance the cam if I had used chevy journals.
