Then and now pictures on Competion Motors in Hollywood (early '60s and 2009)
The manhole cover and the driveway cut-out remains the same, the one-time showroom is converted into a Goodwill store.

I am doing some research on Competition Motors. Does anybody know the source of the below picture which can be found on the "dealer page" of this site? I would be curious to learn for which Steve Allen show the missile was placed on the lot.

you probably need to search through the archives of the local paper which would have carried the original article. microfiche might be kept at the local library...

Check if the paid L.A. Times website has archives.

Thor was deployed from 1959 to 1963.

Steve Allen hosted TV shows from 1953 to 1964.

So maybe start with the 1963-1964 timeframe?

They were too heavy to move around.

I like the irony that the place where you used to buy VW parts is now a dollar store. I guess the neighborhood is moving upscale.
