A friend of mine has been looking at a '51 bug, and it is fitted with tar-boards (sound deadening) in the engine bay.

My understanding is that these didn't come in until 1952, and my '51 is not fitted with them.

Does anyone know the date when these came in?

Many thanks

Perhaps it was optional prior to September '52?

Any further ideas anyone? The car that my friend is looking at is definitly a '51, and these cards don't seem like the sort of thing that someone would add afterwards.

My June and July '52s did not have any tarboards at the engine compartment, it would be simple to tell if they were added or not by the spikes spot welded to the firewall all over the place, it would be possible to add sound insulation later but it would be much more difficult to spot weld all the additional mounting spikes in as VW did

I received further pictures of the '51 this morning, and it looks like it's been added in afterwards - it's been screwed in place. It also looks like it's from a later model - there's a hole in the card where the wire pokes through the firewall on later models.

Seems a very strange thing to have added afterwards, but I guess a previous owner wanted to reduce the noise from the engine!

The earliest firewall cards were not tar boards (either impregnated or sprayed on), but 2 or 3 layers of trunk liner-like hardboard bonded together. This style predates the sprayed-on boards used on '54s and '55s.

He was probably so conditioned from working on the later cars that he assumed they all had it.

Here is a picture of the firewall liner made from two pieces of trunk liner glued together. It is not '54 or later Beetle. Is it Zwitter, late (crotch cooler) Split, or possibly lowlight Ghia? It has three holes for wiring harnesses and the top is designed to be bent
