'63 bug + '68 long axle with '63 drums with a 1 inch spacer.

So what is the largest tire that will sit flush, or mildly tucked with a standard 5.5 inch chrome wheel? If that's not a option, same question with a standard 4.5 chrome wheel. Thanks in advance.

Depends. What offset and back spacing are you trying to run?

They're 3.75 inches for the 5.5 and 4.5s.

Hi. I would probably guess a 165R15 tire, but the availability is not so good. You might be able to use a 195/65R15, where the availability/quality jumps greatly!
Is the engine pic in your gallery the installed engine? If so, I would suggest you check out this local LA area company that's been doing wheel work since Fred Flintstone. Here is a recent post:

I have personally used them for over 30 years. Very good people. If you have a wheel made up you could even run a 215/60R15 tire. I ran a set of Pirelli CN-36's in this size on my type 3 on 914 steel wheels, where this wheel has more back spacing. Tire Rack lists 17 different tires in this size.
If this helps, I may have some different size tires on different size wheels that you could use to "mock up". But most of my wheels are 4-lug.
Hope this helps, Bill.

Thanks Bill, it helps a lot. Having custom offset rims and quality larger tires is a smart fix. It ticks all the boxes. And in regards to the engine, yes that's the installed engine. Again thanks.
