I'm looking at getting the bellhousing and such from a 1.8 Mexican Bus for a TDI project.
I started thinking about the whole transmission.
Can anyone tell me if the shifter is similar to a '78 bus on the Mexican buses? Does the transmission mount in a similar manner at the front (or can one mount be used on the other transmission)? I read that they don't use the rear transmission hangars, and that they don't have the same front, so could the old bus nose be used on the mexican tranny, or mexican mount be used on the bus?
Finally, what years came with the watercooled 1.8 motor? |

Sure, if you wanna hack the crap out of the engine bay to lay the engine over at 50*deg. Cut out the carrier crossmember under the gas tank/firewall while you're at it, otherwise you can't fit the starter. Or you can use a MexiBus transaxle or Kennedy adapter plate to mount the engine at 15*deg and have most things fit nicely.
.. is the TDI in question an ALH? The vacuum pump on the head interferes with the fuel tank unless you take out a notch for clearance .. pretty big notch IIRC. AAZ or 1Z should be a piece of cake. See http://viewfromabus.blogspot.com for an ALH in a Bus... |

Yeah, I am not doing the diesel vanagon thing, the engine will fit at the "regular" 15 degree angle.
I was given a cracked adapter plate to attempt to copy, but since that one cracked, I have since decided I'd rather a VW part, ie the bellhousing.
But I was wondering about using the whole transmission, partially because mine is getting a bit "whiny" and I thought it would be good to have all-newer parts.
Edit: I believe it is a 1Z, it is from a '96 Passat. The vacuum pump is like the older ones. |
