Trying to replace the engine lid seal with a German seal from Busdepot. Seems like a nice seal, fits the opening but seems a little too stiff or fat for the hatch to close. I adjusted the lower strike plate piece so it will close but still seems incorrect. The channel is clean and I wire brushed and wiped all the crap out of it. Do I have to adjust the top hinges too? I cannot get the screws to release at all. Seemed like a simple task. Feeling like an idiot.

I had no trouble with their kit. 1977 bus. This is the engine lid and not the hatch in the inside.

Yep, the engine door below the rear hatch and above the bumper. Not the access hatch inside.

Does it have the groove for the metal lip on the channel to go into?, are you rolling it into that gap between the lip and base of the seal channel?

Just stabbing in the dark here, maybe it's just lousy rubber (wouldn't be the first time).

Yes, rolling it in so the little lip is over the flange. Maybe I need to push harder bit it looks great in the groove until I close the hatch. I can get it to close but had to adjust the strike plate and it is tight. The seal bulges out on the sides and corners.

If it doesn't seal well you may get exhaust gas eddying back into the engine compartment which would include CO gas, which especially if you have the heat on, get up into the cab. Not good.

There are two types of these aren't there? I've never got on with the hollow ones, they seem too fat, they pinch at the top when you shut the lid and split after a few years. That's from observation over 8 years of mechanicing buses for a living. Almost always in tatters or holding the lid partly open.

I prefer the foam ones, I'll see if I can find a photo, they are a strange x-section.

Edit - this one.

I got tired of playing the will it work game with all the different versions of the same seal bus depot sells.
My brother went through 3 of their engine seals before one worked. Me, just one from Wolfsburg west. Fit perfect, closes nice.

My WW seal is now 13-14 years old, still working well.
