I just got back from a 3 day camping trip and when I pulled into the driveway, turned off the motor, a strange sound came from the front of the vehicle. Sounded as if a small motor was whining down. I started my 87 Vanagon again and something wasn't right. Once again when I shut the motor off a weird sound of something spinning/whining continued a few seconds after. I just had a new radiator and fan put in a few months ago. Anyone got any idea what's going on?

Did it sound just like a radiator fan running?
I have no idea what that could be...

Check to see whether or not your right-hand a/c knob on the dash is in the off position. If the knob is turned, even a little, the radiator fan will run until you switch off the ignition, and will spin down causing such a sound.

Yep that was it--my 3 year old daughter must have turned it a bit at one of our stops. Living in Santa Cruz and camping mostly on the coast I have never used the air conditioning. Now I know that the A/C works.
