|
|
The previous owners of my bus put a heavy carpet with a layer of foam in the back, and it worked to deaden the sound as well as keep fumes from the back under control.
However, it was completely fouled with black dust and heavy, so I threw it out when I redid my interior.
I've placed a layer of black outdoor carpet beneath my cabinet and over the rear hatch, but it smells very strongly back there and sometimes I smell it up front when driving.
Have you guys found any way to keep the smell from the rear under control? Do any of you use a lightweight solution?
Thanks
Before
No carpet after, but now using a layer of light outdoor black carpet

Is this a gas smell you are getting or exhaust? |

Gas smell I took care of when replacing the filler neck and fuel neck. The best way I can describe the smell is that it's not like exhaust, but very sooty. |

This is what the ceiling of the engine bay looks like:
I was thinking I would redo it like Patayres has redone his.

Considered anything like Fatmat, or some of the other sound deadening products out there. Is it coming from the overhead hatch over the engine compartment or do you think it is coming from the rear hatch? If that rear hatch seal is bad you will get exhaust rolling into the bus. You wouldn't believe how bad the smell would be if you drove around with the back hatch open. |

No, the one on the hatch I think is what he is talking about. If you look at your muffler end, does it extrude past the bumper? |

Rocketrod,
You are correct about the tailpipe needing to go past the bumper. If it doesn't you will get some real stink back there. |

The seal isn't in the greatest condition, since it was painted over during the last respray. It probably wouldn't hurt if I replaced the hatch one too. |

Ahhhh, the ol' "I can smell the engine up front" syndrome. Aren't you glad you're not one of those that puts a Beetle exhaust on the back of your Bus? You wouldn't be alive to tell us your symptoms if so.
Viewing your pics, all that original insulation above your engine is most likely the suspect since you say you've ripped out other old stuff.
Very imperative that your engine hatch seal and your top hatch seal is good. In addition, all of your tinwork inside the engine compartment and the associated seals should be in good order.
Take out anything old and mildewy. The real test is to put your heat on and see what that smells like. As always, your Bus exhaust should exit from one side, whether it be an original muffler or header/muffler after- market design. _________________ '66 Beetle

What is the 'fuel sender inspection hatch' sealed with? It almost looks like it's not sealed at all. Duct tape that sucker.
Rear hatch seals are expensive but do keep the stink out. _________________ 1975 Westfalia Helsinki - 1800 EFI w/ Pertronix

Okay, this may sound crazy but how about using some tape like you would use if you were taping off an area for painting inside your house. Put the tape on the areas that may be causing this problem and drive around a bit. I bet you could eliminate which hatch is giving you the problem. By the way, the exhaust looks okay to me but it is a little hard to tell if it is beyond the bumper. |

It has Duct Tape, but i should probably add more. I'd really like to cut that part and then actually seal it properly with rubber seals. That hatch was done very badly and it's not even over the actual sender! |

That's an excellent idea. I've got some painter's tape and I'll give that a shot |

I have never seen that much soot on the top of any engine compartment. Something exhaustwise is creating the soot. How is the seal on the inspection hatch inside the bus? My thoughts would be if you removed a large pad that was covering the inspection hatch, that the leak would be there. And as previously mentioned, if your exhaust isn't clearing the bumper or not dumping to the side of the bus into the slipstream, you may want to go and see a local muffler shop and ask them for a slight modification. _________________ James

Has your Bus ever had an engine fire to your knowledge? The masonite on the top of your engine compartment looks like it's been burned, which certainly could lend itself to a sooty smell. _________________ First Trip in the RustyBus:
