|
|
I was following the "Check Coil" instructions from this website, and I have some questions about the resistance readings I got from my coil.
When I checked the resistance between #1 and #15, the resistance was between 1 and 2. The guide says it should be between 3 and 4.5, and that anything higher is bad. This is why I'm a bit confused, as it seems to be lower? Or maybe I didn't do something right?
I checked the resistance between #1 and the center plug and #15 and the center plug, and the reading was about 12 to 12.5 for each one. The guide said anything higher than 10 (thousand?) is no good.
So I guess my question is, is my coil bad?
I have an old black coil on another engine I could replace it with, but I don't know for sure if it's 6v or 12v (any way to check?). And it looks pretty old... |

| I still need help with this, but I just wanted to update my information. It turns out my meter only reads in thousands, and I didn't have it zeroed. After zeroing and measuring from #1 or #15 to the center plug, I get just a bit higher than 11,000 ohms for a reading. Is my coil bad? |

11,000 is too high for the center of the coil. Cold it should be about 8,000.
I just replaced the coil on my bus because because it was running crappy when hot. Turns out the coil resistance was too high; and it wasn't even up to 11,000. _________________ Eric

| Thank you, I will try to find a replacement. Is there any way of knowing whether a coil is 6v or 12v by looking at it? |

It should say it on it somewhere. Look at at top of it and see if it is stamped there. _________________ Jerry Hundley (AKA Slammed 66)

I just got it from the engine. The coil has no markings on it whatsoever, but I'm 90% sure that the generator on that engine is 12v. I checked the coil with my meter, and it was about 7.5k - 8k ohms. Much better, hm?
EDIT: Is the coil supposed to make a sloshy sound when it's shaked? |
