After spending the last 30 min looking into this I am still stuck.
I have a 72 Baja Sedan with what I was told was an engine from a Bus.
These are the engine numbers I could locate. (no riveted on plates were on the engine or fan shroud, etc.)
UNDER THE GENERATOR STAND, IN OFFSET RIGHT/FRONT OF THE PULLEY
H 5214382
DRIVER"S SIDE OF OIL SUP
21 (VW logo) 000.101.101A
PASSENGER SIDE OF OIL SUP
17 (VW logo) 000.101.102E
What are we dealing with here? If you could also guide me as to how you know, so I don't have to ask again.
I wanted to know this information because I need to purchase a pressure plate and clutch disc and wasn't sure if it would make a difference being that the tranny and engine are obviously not original teammates. _________________ On the road. Thanks to the Samba!

The engine # is the one on the case at the bottom of the generator stand
Although that only tells you what it was when it left the factory, H could be a 1500 from a pre 68 bus or could be a replacement case for an AH beetle engine. Either way the transmission is what determines what clutch and PP to use, if it is indeed a 72 it'll have a guide sleeve so any 71+ bug PP should work. Until you get it apart nobody can say anyting is certain though. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
Please don't PM technical questions, ask your problem in public so everyone can play along. If you think it's too stupid post it here
