I just replaced the starter on my 1987 Vanagon (2.1 / Manual). Before replacing the starter motor would not crank/turn at all. I could push start it though. Alternator and battery also tested fine.
Starter is replaced and now it will crank but will not start. Removed from the top. I had to remove the air cleaner housing and some housing just to the left of the air cleaner housing. Looks like everything is back on correctly but wont start.
Any ideas on what may have come un-done or not replaced correctly that would make it not start?

Did you mix up the wires on the solenoid?

How many were there? I am not sure, but I think the one terminal powers the fuel pump relay and ecu during cranking.

I think I got it right. At least, the battery line is on the right terminal. I did notice that the new starter has 2 post on 1 side where the old one only had 1 post. I am going to try and move it to the 2nd post and see if that works. It is acting like it isnt getting gas so it would make since that there is no juice going to the fuel pump.

You got the right spade if it cranks. The other spade gets power when the solenoid is activated. So forget my original idea. I don't have a Bentley manual in front of me to verify the wiring. Check the basics. Assume you left something disconnected or bumped something off.
