Oil filler tube question

Will a syncro oil filler tube fit a two wheel drive? If not why?

The syncro oil fill tube is a different length. It will fit on the engine, but the filler cap will be extremely hard to access from the license plate door. Instead it will be smashed against the engine bay and may not open or extend when you want to fill the oil.

The syncro and 2WD's use the same engine, but that engine sits lower in the syncro. That means the syncro has a different carrier bar to mount the engine a bit lower, different muffler heat shield, different oil filler tube, different dipstick, and a few other things unrelated to engine height. (Let's see: different exhaust headers, different air intake to the airbox, some different coolant line connectors, thermostat housing, gas tank, etc . . . )

The 2wd oil filler tube is now NLA--
The syncro tube will not show up behind the license plate door as it should--it is totally different.

How do you remove the oil filler tube?

Look up against the block--there are two 10 mm nuts holding it there.

The synro tubes VW still has.

The OP is looking for a 2wd specific oil tube assembly which VW has deemed not worthy to stock/manufacture / supply any longer.

If you want just the plastic extension just yank--it'll pop off.

If you want the whole thing, it has to be unbolted at the block--

I am replacing a dead wbx with a live one, and upon stuffing the better one in, I needed to remove the oil fill tube. I didn't remove it below at the block, but just pulled hard on the plastic top and bingo it came off nicely. I did support the metal tube below so no worries there, but now I can't for the life of me get that plastic top back on., I have pretty much ruined the one that came on the engine, and the one that was on the dead engine also. Maybe this is somthing that is just beyond me, but is there a way to stick the plastic top back on? And also, does anyone know of an easy alternative, and aftermarket product that isn't the vw solution? my oh my, it has tried my patience the most of anything thus far.

Same problem. Only destroyed one tube so far! Must be a trick out there somewhere. Very frustrating for something that just poped off and seemingly should just push back on. Any information appreciated.

If you guys have a loose telescoping tube on the oil fill assembly--do this ( and it will work, and work well )

Pop the plastic telescoping unit off and ckean the metal portion off real good with lacquer thinner, abd do the same with the inside of the plastic tube.

Lay a thin bead of Industrial Goop on the metal, and shove the telescoping unit back on.

Then lay a nice heavy bead on the edge of the plastic & metal tube.

The hard part here is to leave it alone for at least 12 hours.
Don't drive the Van, don't start the engine.

You'll have a permanent bond, and a semi flexable joint that won't leak or snap off.

Simple and it works.

I managed to get my extra back on. Marked on the outside the position of the indent on inner tube so I could get it started in right position on metal tube. Then I used needle nose plires to slightly bend the thin inner tube inward to better clear metal tube. I used my box knife to chamfer ( cut all around the inside edge at about a 45% angle)the thicker outer tube. Greased metal tube. Soaked end in boiling water. Pushed and twisted and After several tries go lucky and it slipped on. The tube has about 1/8 inch lip, once that is onto metal, indents are lined, and thinner inner section doesn't hang up, it slips the rest of the way easily. I dont know if any of these was the answer or I just got lucky, but whew, a problem overcome until the next one comes up. Also I cut the wrecked oil filler in half lengthwise to see what inside looked like and slipped half on the see how it fit. Go Westy will sometimes sell used filler tubs if you need another. I removed the plastic part first by applying heat around the joint area with a heat gun. Going back on u have to make sure the thin sleeve of the plastic one fits inside the metal tube before pushing on. Looks like a tube inside a tube-from the bottem end.
