| Recently I recieved some used parts with a few oil pump housings. I noticed that there is different sizes in the housings where the studs go through. It looks like some have the 26mm gear but also can have a larger, thicker housing then others Does anyone know what the differences are? |

You probably have a mixture of oil pumps from flat-cam and dished-cam engines. What that's about is, when the dual ports came out, VW went to a "dished" cam gear, allowing more room inside the case for a deeper oil pump and 26mm gears. Flat-cam oil pumps, in order to go to taller gears you had to extend them out of the case. If you compare them with the gears installed, you'll notice the length is different from the case mounting surface to where they engage the slot in the cam.
