I need to know what the thread size is of the screen topped screw that holds the reservoir to the top of the master cylinder.
Thanks,

Here are pics of my MC Joey, sorry for not getting back to your e-mail a sooner.
The res nut mic's out at 21.98mm (22mm presumably) with a thread pitch of 1.5mm.
The steel res was recently zinc plated, the camera flash makes it look way more shiny than it really is...
(I'll reply to your e-mail about the gen/reg later, but it sounds to me like a reg problem...) _________________ John Henry

That is rare to see the strainer still intact.
Your are missing the float but that isn't really needed.

The float is the small disc at the end of the spring toward the brake lines, right? I think it's not missing, it's laying under the vice where I disassembled it
I think I've found an aluminum reservoir used, but nice so I'll run it as it was originally. The cups are very pliable, so I'm going to run them if I can bleed the system without any leaks. |

Wow Eric. That one looks very nice. I hope to have one assembled very soon myself. The reservoir nut that I got doesn't have the strainer on it anymore. I know that I should have an aluminum reservoir but I just got a steel one and I might run it, providing there aren't any holes in it.
Anybody have a spare aluminum one they want to sell?

According to this source (I think these pictures are borrowed from VW parts books) the float was not used together with the strainer.

digging up an old thread because i know these things are hard to find in good condition.
i recently bought some of these nuts/screens from a somewhat poorly listed classified ad. here is the link, there may still be some available (i bought 3 ):

Those look different from the original ones, but if the thread and seat is the same, they should work. The ones I have are in my pic above, and are like Oval53LHDs. _________________ John Henry

here's an original i removed from a master cylinder years ago. i've saved it as a spare since they are so difficult to find.
i think previous discussion in this thread has pointed out there are two (or more) different styles, and even the exploded diagram above shows three different styles.
the thread pitch is the same as the non screened one that came with my '51, and they both fit in my steel reservoir and master cylinder just fine. i even have one installed in my '59 Bus' aluminum reservoir. |
