March 13 - Hot VWs Drag Day – Irwindale
Starting off the VW racing season on the West Coast, the gates open at 7am for the CB Performance sponsored Hot VWs Drag Day and all VW car show and swap meet at the Toyota Speedway in Irwindale, CA. On the 1/8 mile Drag Strip see the world’s fastest Volkswagens in OUTLAW-TURBO/VW and SUPER-STOCK/VW . . . and the fastest women in VWs in POWDER-PUFF, as well as special brackets for Busses, water-pumpers and one for 36hp based cars. The car show is hosted by DHK, Foreign Fantasy and German Folks. Car show entry is free with spectator admission. Swap spots are also free with spectator admission to private parties selling used VW related items. All dealers and potential sponsors need to check in with the office. Spectators $20, kids under 12 free, drag race entry $45 car and driver. Toyota Speedway is located at 500 Speedway Drive, Irwindale, CA. May 1 – Bug-In 36 – Fontana
The Grand Daddy of VW events, Bug-In 36 sponsored by CB Performance, FLAT-4 and CSP, takes place at the Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, CA. The fastest VWs in the United States on the ¼ mile dragstrip, the most beautiful VWs in the US in the car show and one of the biggest all VW swap meets you may ever see. Highlights this year will include; the debut of the Schley Brothers Dragster and “Chop-Top” Lightning Bug sedan, both of which are restored back to the way they were during the Bug-In events of the 1970’s. The BuzzinBee, another restored 70’s gasser will also be there, along with some of the fastest VWs in the World competing in OUTLAW TURBO/VW and SUPER STOCK/VW. There will also be special drag racing classes for Powder-Puff, Busses, 36hp cars and water-pumper VWs. The car show entry and swap spots are still free with spectator admission. New for Bug-In 36 will be a vintage display between the pits and the vender area of rare early VWs that will be attending the VW Treffen in September. There will also be a DKP Club display, Bruce Meyers and the Manx Club and there will also be a special camping display setting up Saturday afternoon, with special awards on Sunday, hosted by West Coast Bays. Oh, and don’t forget the VTO/SV2s club raffle. Top prize will be a complete VW engine! Auto Club Speedway is located at 9300 Cherry Avenue. Fontana, CA 92335. June 11 – VW Classic Toy and Memorabilia Show – IrvineOne of the highlights of the annual VW Classic weekend is the VW COLLECTIBLES SHOW held at the host hotel, the Irvine Crowne Plaza Hotel, on Saturday afternoon, the day before the VW Classic. The doors open to the public at 2pm giving everyone a chance to check out the OCTO show in the morning. At this year’s Collectible Show there will be a raffle at 3:30pm. Venders and spectators will get one ticket each for a chance to win a special vintage tin VW model restored by Bob Gilmore and a hand painted rock by Ron Petro, along with some other cool stuff to be announced. The show winds down at 4pm to give everyone plenty of time to go out to dinner and take in some bowling with Clyde Berg. Spectators are $5, kids under 12 are free. Tables are $40. The Irvine Crowne Plaza Hotel is located just across the 405/San Diego Freeway from the Orange County/John Wayne Airport and only a few off ramps north of the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre where the VW Classic will take place on Sunday. August 10 – Big Wednesday – San Onofre
Big Wednesday, every second Wednesday in August, is just a day to skip work and go to the beach.
September 11 – So-Cal Vintage VW Treffen – Anaheim
A truly vintage show, a tribute to the great vintage VW shows in Europe, the So-Cal Vintage VW Treffen, sponsored by Wolfsburg West and held at the Phoenix Club in Anaheim, is open to Split Windows, Oval Windows, Press Bumper Busses, 1959 and earlier Karmann Ghias, Coachbuilt VWs and Military Vehicles. There is a weekend of activities including the SPEEDWELL Ralley on Saturday morning, ending at the Phoenix Club with a pre-registration party. Sunday is the show; gates open to the public at 7am.
