Other than the placement and the size of the hole for the turn signal, are there any differences between the 63 and 65 fender? I ask because I have found a nice pair of 65 fenders is it worth the effort to make them 63 correct?

Turn signal placement is the only difference that I know of.

That's what I thought. Has anybody ever doe this conversion? With what success? Is there a contour in the finder that you have to match when you close up the hole?

I just measured the distance from the headlight and and the edge of the fender then eyeballed it from there then used a hole saw to drill a hole the same size as the old one in the new location and then took the piece that came out with the hole saw and used it to fill in the original hole.

This is from a Technical bulletin about adding 58-63 turn signals to fenders that didn't have them:

Andy,

Do you have a tech bulletin for adding turn signal lights for the 1965 and later front fenders? I recently purchased an NOS VW factory passenger fender manufactured in the 1960s and it came w/o T/S holes..horn hole and headlight in place...

That came from the Technical bulletins stored in the Technical part of the site. That one I think is dated from 1960 or 61. I've never seen one that talked about later fenders.

My old '62 had a '65 L/F fender when I got it. Since the paint was nice I didn't want to weld and paint so I took the turn signal off and found that if you move the light as far forward as the seal will still cover the '65 holes it is 1/4" to the rear of the proper '63 location and no one will notice. I simply drilled the new holes, touched up the paint so as not to rust and reinstalled the light, then sealed the old hole to the rubber seal from underneath with black RTV sealant.
