I'm doing a budjet build and have been recyling parts that were insalled by the P. O. , and want to know what everyone thinks if this worth the extra time instead of just buying new? I have a "bad habit" of saving all hardware pieces when I do do any remodeling on the house, cars, electronics or whatever.

I took the front fenders from the wide eyed front Baja Kit, and put them on the back of the bug. As everyone on this forum knows, you can put the front fenders on the rear if you swap sides with them. The PO must have been a meat cutter, because he did a serious butcher job on the cut-outs for the headlights. Maybe it was a 12-pack job who knows?

If you look at the first pic you can see that the hole for the headlight isn't exactly semetrical. I used a hunk of 3/16 diamond plate, that my brother-in-law Blonde Johnson gave to me to cut out a plug to fill in the hole for the original headlight. I had some clamps that are used to anchor a sink to a kitchen counter top in the bin in the garage.

What can I say, the wife ambushed me and we endend up re-doing her kitchen and then it spred to the dining room, staircase and the guest bedroom. Those sink clamps worked perfectly to hold the diamond plate to the fenders.

Why do these dames always seem to be able to balance my precious garage time with their stuff and such plans anyways?

There were these maltese cross tail lights, for sale on Ebay, and for thirty some bucks delivered, I gave them a shot. The "Iron Cross", a serious German Icon and fits with the whole connection to the origins.

Why not? Tell us how it works for you. I used the same tail lights on my Sand Shark Buggy last year.

That is one hell of a texture. At first I thought it was rain drops sitting outside until I looked closer.

I'm still thinking if I like the body texture. But the cross tail lights look cool.

I like it. I like the texture, like the diamond plate and taillights. The color i'm not so sure about, but hey i'm not in Minnesota. Just remember it is you build, the only one it really have to please is you...

Another good use of truck bed liner coating. Whith that color, you shouldn't have any problems finding it in the snow.

There is the pic of the tail light looking straight back and it looks like it is flush with the diamond plate and that looks cool until the next pic where it sits on top of the diamond plate.. Flush mount the lights and would look BEEETCHON... by the way the color is kind of cool. would be able to find it in the desert out here...

After going through a bunch of NEW parts that ended up being junk, I can say that buying used original VW parts and refurbishing them is a much better choice that buying new.
I am not saying all parts, but certain ones will last a lot longer than some of the new aftermarket stuff thats out there for sale.

I agree that flush mounting the tail lights would be great, but diamond plate is a bear to cut. It would be way more work than I want to do for a tail light.

The truck bed liner is a custom color from Grizzly Grip. It does add about thirty five pounds to the car, but I plan on putting in a 110 h.p. Subaru engine to handle the extra weight of that and the roll cage. I also want to have reliable heat/defrost for the Minn. winter.

I went with truck bed liner because the car will be run a lot on gravel roads, so there won't be any issues with small stones chipping paint.

Nachodaddy77, I don't know the history of "colors of the 90's", but Baja 72 hit the nail on the head.

If I'm out playing in a full tilt, white out, snowstorm, I want to be seen by the "other guy". It's the old addage of defensive driving, watch out for the other guy. The schools here have switched street signs to a similar color, and the Fire Department is now painting some of their test trucks the same color. The only problem I can see is, it's going to be like painting "arrest me red" on a hot rod. I'll stick out like a sore thumb, waiting for Jonny Law to pull me over.

Minnesota is a lot like Cali, we have a huge Immigrant Population here, that came from the topics. We also have people transfering from the proverbial sunbelt. You get all of these "rookies" driving in the snow for the first time, and it's like demolition derby on the freeway. We get tolal gridlock, and a couple of hundred multi-car accidents within a 2 hour time span, and it's "Fun in River City".

I will post some more pics of the body mock-up after I hook up my other computer.
