I have a distributor with 2 vacuum ports and a EMPI 34-P-3 carb
Only one of the vacuum advance lines is connected. Where are the 2 distributor vacuum lines supposed to connect?
Thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill,
The vacuum port on the left side of the carb is connected to the wrong port on the distributor and you need a shepherds hook to prevent fuel from running into the distributor and ruining the diaphragm. This controls the timing advance
Something like this https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2327965 for the shepherds hook.
The second port on the back of the carb that appears to have a tube jammed in it goes to the port on the distributor towards the front of the car where the black hose is currently connected. This controls the timing retard.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Ken! Just what I needed.
I think I can make a shepherds hook / loop with a long enough piece of vacuum hose. |

That will work well. You just need to keep the gas from going to the distributor vacuum canister. _________________ www.vwnos.com [email protected]

| You don't want to hook up the retard can unless it holds vacuum when you suck on it. If the can leaks it is nothing more than another vacuum leak that will give problems at idle and off idle. Note that most retard cans are bad at this point. |

Hmmm. I need to check it. Maybe that's contributing to me not being able to hold an even idle and not stalling when warmed up. I can't get a much faster idle even with the Bypass Screw (big one) turned out pretty far. Thats the next problem I'm trying to resolve... |

| So if it runs fine except when I’m slowing down and on the brakes? It dies when I’m on the brakes and coming to a stop. 😞 |

| If you have a working retard can on the distributor you need a carb which is designed to work with it. They will typically have a smallish hole drilled in the throttle plate to give more air at idle. |
