I have a 1776 with stock DP heads. No head work done but does have a mild cam. Can anyone reccomend what size carb to run. I have a 36 but it cuts out alot in the mid to top end.

I'd go dual Kadrons w/a 1 3/8 merged header with a single exhaust.

That single carb size if fine, its not working because it needs a rebuild/tuned correctly.
