Hi,

I just acquired a beetle and need help in dating.

The body number is clearly readable: 15-09493
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

But the chassis number is very rusty.

Anybody can help me reading from the pic?
Or is there any mean (some chemicals like in the CSI) to act as a contrast?

From my quick examination, I think this could be a late June or early July 1952.

Thanks.

I'm looking at the photoshop shots and the non-edited shots and I'm seeing
1-0564350 (Nov. 1953)
This would be what I see if the font is similar to the body stamping. If I assume a different font it could be
1-0354830 (May 1952)
You might be better off trying to I.D. the frame based on detail changes.

Thank you, bwaz & EVfun.

When I look at the body number, it's more likely that the car is from 1952.

I tried to look for chassis and body numbers from Claus Missing's Karmann registry and from TheSamba Pre-53 registry, make a cross reference and this is what it came up with (using our body number as the key and sort the data by chassis number):
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

From this table, if total production per day in 1952 is assumed stable/constant, then I estimate it at 272 unit per day.
Using this number I estimate production date of my car is between 25 and 30 June 1952 and the chassis number is between 1-363717 and 1-365073.
Could it be 1-0364839?

Cheers,

Maybe use baby powder and lightly dust it off...

Hi, Light sanding with very fine coarse., Polish it with a dremel or so and then you might see the nr. If that does not help....I will see what I can find about what you can use to find the nr.
I have to look at my files what kind of stuff will work. Is your data announced at Claus? Maybe he knows what car it is. Do not forget to send him some picts or to me. Greetings. Peter

I appreciate if you could do so, Peter.

No, I have not announced it yet, since I am sure what the number is.

Hi Perry,
I can read on your chassis 1-0354830. Your Karmann has body 15-09493. I think you have the original chassis to the body. It would be great to get some pictures from you for the KARMANN Registry. Now we have (since today) 153 split convertibles and 150 Hebmüllers! In only a few weeks so many new cars! It´s unbelievable! I try to load them up after getting the pictures.
Thanks
Claus

Hi Claus,

Thank you for the information. I am sending this information to Stiftung Museum personnel to run a check. I will take some picture load load to your registry as well as the registry here, on thesamba after I get the confirmation from the museum.

@ZwitterND: yes, it is a split convertible.
