On Digifant system is the distributor gear offset recess, at TDC, to the left (short side of the offset) or the right.

The Bentley does not show any photos down the dizzy hole. And 13.39 & 28.44 are not digifant dizzy's, at least not what I have. The schematic on 28.40 is of no help.

Smaller segment on the left, slot pointing to approximately 1 o'clock. Same for 1.9 or 2.1. Doesn't really matter with a 2.1, though, there's no need to accomodate the vac pod so the diz can be anywhere you want it. Matters a lot on the 1.9's, though, the pod is huge.

Lemme hijack this one and share my shame: When I did my rebuild I put the distributor drive gear in the wrong way, 180 degrees off. Twice.

I wanted to know if my new engine would even run, so I re-arranged the spark plug wires and away we go. I want to pull the gear and install it correctly but I am super-mega paranoid about the drive shims slipping off the shaft and dropping into my case where they will clatter and mete out destruction and sadness.

Is there a trick to pulling the drive out with some degree of assurance the shims won't drop onto the case?

As far as I can tell I got lucky the first time I pulled it and the shims stayed stuck to the drive.

It's actually pretty hard to lift out the diz drive without leaving the shims behind. The shims are larger diameter than the drive gear teeth so they actually hang on the spiral gear, IF they lift off their seat, which they usually don't do anyway, what with gravity an' all. They always stay behind for me. If you want to be extra sure just remove the ovoid flat cover for the mechanical fuel pump flange to the right of the diz, and you can stick something down thru there to hold the shims down. After the diz drive is out just lift them out with a magnet.

Ah! There we go.

For some reason I had it in my mind that the shims can get loose in the case and wreck the works.

As a side note to anyone who stumbles on this thread at some future date: When I first saw my mistake and decided to remove the drive, I had difficulty extracting the damn thing. Apparently you need some uni-tasker tool from VW. I didn't have one so I mixed up some 5-minute epoxy and glued a bamboo skewer to the divot in the center of the drive. Once the epoxy had semi-set after 10 minutes, I was able to pull the drive right out. 5-minute epoxy doesn't really get down to business for at least a couple of hours so it's very easy to pry out the little dab of epoxy from the drive.
