I recently became aware of an abrasive whirring sound coming from the engine compartment of my '60 Beetle. The sound appears to come from the area of the generator/belt/pulley. When I removed the belt and turned the generator by hand, nice and quiet. However, the pulley tabs are worn, shims and generator shaft are rusty, lots of rust dust, and the Woodruff key is very worn. I'm guessing the noise is due to the rusty shims; sound reasonable?

I want to replace the pulley etc. and my Bug is converted to 12v using a Porsche generator from a 356. Should a pulley set for my car from WW work OK with this generator?

Thanks as always for any feedback.

Yes that pulley should work.

Your trouble may be the generator bearings. Even if you can't feel it when you turn it by hand, you may have one or more balls in the bearing that are no longer round.

But when the pulley is starting to eat itself like yours, it's time for a new pully. So replace the pully anyway and hope for the best.

Distinctive Bronze smell comes from Gen Bushing's !
If Heater Boxes are hooked up heater goin theres no mistakin the smell !
Gen / Alt bushing's are infamous for leavin a V.W. stranded in the Middle of the Desert !
This is due mostly in part to Imbalance's in the Fann , and worn Pulleys caused from in most part improper installation !
A Bugg will runn for year's around Town with Badd Pulley and or a Fann Imbalance !
But jump out on the freeway and Sustain cruiseing RPM for 3 Hours at a wack 65 and 70 MPH ?
The Imbalance or worn Pulley will Manifest itself it a Shot Gen Bushing every Time !
One of the Most common ailments or Break Downs that Occur in V.W. Runn's !
Why Im alway's out front !
That way Im not Obligated to Help My fellow V.W. Enthusiast to Fix there Car ?
Teasin But you get the Picture !
Route 66 you see the Nicest Hott Rodd's broke Down ? Go figure !
Only as good as the Guy who build's it ?
118 in the Shade around Here come Summer Time !
100's of miles between Town's of any Size !
The Mojave Dessert !
Before Cell phones were Prevalent ?
People use to break Down and then Die, out here !
Was more common than you would think ?
Nice Fann some are welded and Balanced !
Nice Pulley !
Good fittin Fann shroud are a Must do for a Real Cruiser !
