You can compare to these kits and take your choice

http://www.aircooled.net/new-bin/viewproductdetail.php?keyword2=FSK0060&cartid=

You could save a couple of 100 bucks but then when you get some carbs thrown together any old way at the factory, what the price of getting then to work going to be?

I had one set of these EMPI chinese set of carbs for single port engine. I was satisfied with the set, brass T junctions, good quality hose clamps etc.
The carbs are easy to tune, (with balance tube) and gives a little more power over the single factory fitted carb, but not as good as the 2 barrel carbs. The jetting was almost correct for the 1,6 SP engine from out of the box.

I know that some will disaggree but IMHO they worth their price.

I would recommend getting a real Weber set. The EMPI copies I have seen have been of poor quality. They had to be disassembled and have the needle valves replaced, and gaskets replaced with Weber parts. The real ones are worth the extra $100.00

They are what I am running. I got them for 300 last summer and they have been decent. They ran great out of the box...which is good because the adjustment screw on the left carb seems to tighten up when you loosen it...... Yeah they are cheap, but they do work.

Strickly Foreign sells the empi version for $279 which includes disassembly, cleaning and setting float level. For an additional $45 they will jet per application.
Anyone gone this route.....I would expect this would make the empi version comparable to the weber ict version which cost over $400.

My EMPI version still works great without any troubles, though I had to re-jet for a bit leaner. I still believe it worths the money.

I put some on my wives bug and they have worked great. I checked them out when I bought them before I put them on and was surprised at the how good they looked.

EMPI sucks royal donkey dick... as long as people shop by price, they will continue to innundate the market with shitty, subpar and cheap VW parts.

I'm considering a set for my wife's 68 bus to go on the either 1835(tw) or 1915 I'm going to build. StricklyForeign sells them(float levels chk'd and set to specs.) and will pre-jet them to your your engine for a small fee.

I know that this is an old, dead thread, but I to anyone who is searching and comes across it (like I did) I wanted to say that I just put a set of EMPI 34mm Weber copies (the EPC carbs) on my single port 1600 and have no complaints--the engine started right up and ran pretty good right off the bat, then improved once I synchronised them (I used a set of gauges I would normally use for synchronising 4 cylinder motorcycle carbs).

One thing to remember, remove the balance tube and plug the holes before synchronising--I didn't and had my gauge needles bouncing around all over the place. Also, BE SURE that you have all the vacuum ports plugged--I didn't at first and couldn't figure out why it was running so fast (d-oh!).

The carbs I got are identical, (not left side and right side), and so that makes things a little weird, (both fuel lines enter from the left, both throttle linkages lean to the left, both idle screws are accessed from the left, both low speed mixture screws are accessed from the right, both vacuum ports are on the left, that kind of thing), and that means that sometimes the access is really good and sometimes it's really bad (on the right side carb the fan shroud gets in the way a lot), but once you get used to it, all is fine. I am sure that doing it this way keeps the costs down. I am only using the idle screw on the right carb, since it is easiest to access, the left side idle screw I backed way out.

Oh also the instructions are not super clear--the worst part was that the parts list that came with mine was actually for a different kit with double venturi carbs, so nothing on it looked like anything I had. At first I thought that the kit did not come with new intake gaskets, but eventually I found them in with the nuts and bolts, not in the bag with the other gaskets.

The kit I got came with a hex bar linkage and all in all everything looked pretty decent.

I installed a Compufire DIS-IX ignition kit at the same time and am pretty happy with that, too, though I admit that I need to fine tune the ignition timing a bit.
