howdy all, about 8 months ago I came across a fella that had some old bugs he wanted to get rid of on his property, when I arrived at his place what first caught my eye was a fiberglass dune buggy in the weeds that was unusual and awesome looking(most everything else was junkers).I took some pictures and sent them to my father and he immediatly wanted the buggy, a deal was struck and it made a trip to Houston,Texas. We have located a riveted tag on the body that reads: Free Spirit , manufactured in Austin,Texas. The year reads 1979. The body is a two seater and behind the seating area the body extends up to form a arc, the front of the buggy forms a point that looks similar to a 70's model corvette nose,I have enjoyed building and racing vw's for about 20 years and have never seen one of these buggys,so if anyone has any info or leads on finding out more about it please help me.We have completely redone this buggy and intend to have it at as many vw shows in south Texas as we can and would enjoy finding who made these. Thank You, Randy Larsen

I've never heard of that model either. You could try Bart Shoemaker over at Dunebuggyarchives.com . Send several pictures from all angles, including the riveted tag.
Bart might not have that model in the database, yours may be the first!
I wouldn't mind seeing a pic of it either, if you want to post a couple pics in the gallery. _________________ OG JHC

Great posting,Thanks again hopefully someone will recognize it and have some info, also the wing that is attached to the rear is not original,it used to have a fiberglass engine cover that would not fit after we put on the dual carbs,so dad built a aluminum wing that really looks terrific......Randy

I still vote for the Concept One, or a Concept Clone.

Wow,now we are getting somewhere !!!!! That does look just like it Unclebob, the only differences I see are the front fiberglass nose has different headlight mountings and we had to make a windshield for our buggy. Where did you find this picture and how do I find out more info on this car..........Thanks again,Randy

That car is owned by a local club member. Shoot me an e-mail and I'll try and get you in touch with the owner.
There's a couple of these buggies cruising the streets locally. I really like the body style, very sleek. Last year I saw one wearing it's original Metal Flake Gel-Coat. I'll see if I can find the picture. _________________ OG JHC
