I searched the archives for information regarding the EGR light and I understand that it comes on at a set mileage interval, but why is mine flickering?
It never stays on but rather is very dim and goes away as I accelerate.

| Does the alternator warning light work? Both the EGR and Alt light from memory should come on with the key in the on position. Both should go out when the engine is started and the alternator is charging. This was VW's early version of a "bulb" check. |

Yes it sounds like you are having either a belt slipping problem or an alternator problem. That light comes on with your alt light and if the alt light isn't working then this could be coming on alone. _________________ Thanks,

Interesting. Yes, my alternator light and EGR light both go on when the key is in the on position, then they both go out. I've been suspect of my alternator for a while now. Sometimes when I'm driving with the lights on I notice the alt light is just barely lit (very dim like I described with the EGR light).
Last night on my way home from work (with the head lights on) was the first time I ever noticed the flickering EGR light. Then on the way to work this a.m. (head lights off) no flickering EGR light. So, you guys are probably right. My alternator isn't charging correctly. Maybe on it's way out??
I know there's away to check the voltage at the alternator so I'll try and knock that out over the weekend. Anyone know how to do this off the top of their head?? Also, can the alternator voltage be tested at the battery??
One last question, if I do need a new alternator, any suggestions?? (Brands, upgrades, crossovers, etc).
As always, thanks in advance. |
