Hi
Well I just got my first vanagon for some of you who don't know me I run aircooled vw shop but this is the first vanagon I have owned its a 1980 California model so I have been driving it this weekend the first time it has been on the road since 2000 and it is doing well.
I still have some things to fix like the odo doesn't work (bad gear) and no fuel gauge so I have no way of knowing how far I have gone and how much fuel is in it.
there is a whuring noise as you accelerate I think its just the fan.
I also need a couple of things I can't find I need a battery clamp and the white plactic tube that runs from the decal valve to the intake I have looked in the classifieds but no joy so far, does anyone know where to purchase these parts?
I will be out camping in Canada in a week or two once a shake it down and put a few miles on it.

Well since you run an air cooled shop you probably have it under control, but let me see if I can help with a couple things.
Fuel gage could be the sender or the gauge itself, there is also a small part on the instrument foil that gets knocked loose sometimes that might mess it up.
I'll see if I can find it and I'll post it.
the wuring your hearing might be the fan, or it could be the rear differential going out, the bad thing about that is you have to change the whole tranny or have the tranny rebuilt to fix it.
The parts your looking for are junkyard parts, but good luck finding them in a junkyard.
contact somebody like sleepyjoe.

and ask him if he has what you need, he may have it, he just can't put all his stuff in the classifieds.
Hope that helps

Thanks
ya the fuel gauge I have already changed the gauge (I have a few spares) and that little part on the foil is a voltage stabilizer I have to go back into the dash to replace the odo gear and I will try another stabilizer next will be the sender I need to replace all the vent lines anyway (they are leaking what a surprise) the noise from the engine is sitting still a revving it or driving so I think its the fan I have never heard that sound from my type ones. I don't do a lot of work with type 4 mostly type 1 or waterboxers. up here Iam the only guy who has dead vanagons for parts.

when I got mine, the fuel gauge was out too and I ended up replacing the entire cluster.

about 250 miles/tank, and 18.5 mpg is a good, conservative reference for distance over quantity till you get yours figured out. my lowest milage (based on GPS trip milage and topping up the tank to the first cutoff of the handle) was 16.5, best 22.8. but 18.5 is a good average for my Westy.

I'll let you do the conversions.

you dont really need the de-accel valve, unless you are looking to restore the thing. i run mine w/o de-accel valve, with no ill effect.
