Q:2
Thinking economically you can use a mower battery and it will get you by.
But if you do not want to sacrifice capacity and cranking amps, you should look into the newer glass-mat GEL style.
Now available under a few private label distributors, the prices are only outrageous instead of ridiculous. (when first introduced)
Summit has the line, sometimes under a private label but seems to be the same battery. Neat billet aluminum brackets are available also.
Mine is two years old now and has never let me down.
You won't save money by going glass / gel but the weight, power, ability
to stay charged over long periods, lack of maintenance etc,. has been a good purchase for me. |

| You can buy a piece of cork or rubber gasket material at any parts house cheap. 2 minutes with a pair of scissors and you're done. |

| I was just at a Tractor Supply the other day and they have lots of smaller batteries (tractors, ATVs, etc) at good prices. I saw one that had 360 cca that was small and priced right. |

Per Murzi:

| A vw starter is .8kw. Divide that by 12.65 volts and you get about 63 amps needed to crank the car. Add a buffer and just make it 100 amps to spin the starter and you can see why 250-275 CCA's will do just fine. |

Replaced the battery in my dad's miata with a riding mower battery - same specs and all. Best part it was a lot cheaper. |
