here are 2 of the 3 doghouse horizontal cross bars, that connect the triple trees on the flaps

the 1971 only bar does not use triple trees and has 2 holes on each end to connect directly to the flaps

these 2 bars are very similar, as you can see the upper is almost straight, the lower has a dig around the oil cooler, i got 3 questions

1 - does anyone know what years each bar are supposed to be for?

2 - do you think 1 bar is "better" than the other?

3 - if "better", why?

The lower bar is correct for a shroud with a DOGHOUSE oil cooler shroud. The other bar is not.

I've been told the single piece unit is more likely to bind during operation, but can't confirm any official documentation on it.

VW at least saw it necessary to complicate things and go to the triple support bar method, so there may be some truth to it. Can't imagine it wasn't for good reason as I bet it was more costly to produce the later style.
