First and foremost, I get it, "german engineers were super smart and did everything for a reason, stop trying to improve on their design!!"
If you're only going to reply to say that, please save us all some time..
Now that that is out of the way...
have there been any improvements on the fuel filler hoses over the years? I got tired of the four wide rubber bands on 3 pieces of tubing (two rubber, one metal) because it's such a PITA the get those damn seals to stay in place while trying to wedge the tubes on.. so I replaced those three pieces with one piece of marine grade fuel hose about 4 or 5 years ago..
As is to be expected, I must have done something wrong because something is no longer seated so when I pump gas, i've got a small leak where the hose meets the gas tank. Wondering if there is a ready made option to upgrade to or if I'll be back to the drawing board on my design. Not interested in going back to stock.. _________________ -pariah

There has been a lot of discussion of this in the type 3 and 411/412 forums.
Its interesting.....type 3 uses all of those damn rubber seals between the filler neck parts and the hose.
The type 4 cars use roughly the same filler hose as type 3....I buy type 3 hose and cut it in two parts to make my type 4 filler neck hoses because there are no type 4 parts available.
And....type 4's never had any of those rubber band/seals from the factory. We never have leaks.
The only thing I can figure is that on type 3 your fuel filler pipe is very horizontal compared to type 4. Ours is at about 60*. The fuel laying in the filler neck all the time may swell the rubber.
Having that secondary seal makes for a good bit more crush depth.
I would try a liberal but uniform coating of something fuel proof and pliable on both parts...the inside of the hose and the connector.....and let it dry and then connect and clamp. I would try something like Permatex Motoseal or Yamabond. Both are very fuel proof and stay pliable giving some crush and sealability after drying. Ray |

I'll toss up your photo of the setup. I think if you are using a quality name brand fuel hose you should be getting the improvements in rubber and reinforcement developed over time. You might look more toward the automotive side as that may be more tolerant of gasoline that contains 10% alcohol.

Thanks! i forgot I had uploaded a pic when I did it..
One thing I did have issues with with that hose was cutting it because it has a spiral coil going through it.. I did my best with a cutting wheel in an angle grinder, but it wasn't perfect.. could be part of the problem too..
searched my amazon history.. looks like I bought it in 2019.. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002M1D1M4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
not sure if Dayco is a "quality" brand of not, but it did survive almost 4 years.. _________________ -pariah

Two other fuel smell is from bad filler cap or its rubber sealing ring, the other is over filling the tank causes some of the fuel going out the overflow hose. Ok a third, hose clamps on the fuel filer loosen over time and you just need to tighten them. |
last time i filled up i did it with the hood open. hopefully it's as easy as the clamps having worked loose, but fuel DEFINITELY trickles from the bottom of the hose where it is clamped to the tank, but only while filling. so it's certainly a problem with that connection. no leaks while driving or while parked, just filling. _________________ -pariah

Mine would smell after a quick turn If I filled up to high. |
smell isn't the issue.. it was the puddle forming under my front end when filling that alerted me to this problem... _________________ -pariah

I do have an idea for that hose that may help. Try to get the length you don’t have to cut. If you can’t put the cut end toward the filler.
You may also switch to some type of spring clamp. The type you pinch with pliers to open move into place. _________________

As mentioned that sounds to me as the overflow hose that drops extra in that exact area, but you check that ???? |
The bottom of the filler hose is wet when filling.

I'm fairly certain I did put the cut end on the filler side and the factory end on the tank, but I might not have.. I'll have to double check..
I actually think I should upgrade from the factory original clamps to just a modern worm clamp with FI style hose protection. Next been a fan of spring clips, PITA to install/remove.. _________________ -pariah
