Have you ever seen radio wires like these ones. It looks like there are three harnesses. They are VW, really weird and does not look like the Go westy vid.
I'm installing a new radio with Bluetooth for my phone and this is what I found.
Also the colors of the wires don't match the colors they are suppose to be for the speaker connections. It looks like factory wiring, really weird. Wondering if anyone has seen this.

Is that your new wiring already tied in? I prefer to solder in the new radio leads directly to the original wiring rather than having the intermediate plugs in there.
If your not sure on the wiring, process of elimination! Or 97.196 in the Bently...
Plug in the middle is Illumination, Power, Ground.
Plug on the left is one set of speakers and plug on the right is the other.
Note there is no Ignition wire in the original radio harness so the radio can always be turned on regardless of ignition. Bonus points to put an A-B switch to be able to select radio triggered by ignition-on or constant-on. I leave mine set to ignition for daily use and ignition when hanging out in there! |

Just cut that shit out. Open up your doors and look to see what wires are feeding your speakers.
Other than speakers you literally need 3 wires. Ground, constant 12v, and a switched 12v (that you will need to steal from the fan if you dont have it already)
I installed Sta-kon disconnects 8 yrs ago and they are coming in handy now. If and when you swap head units in the future it will save you soldering |

| Thanks for the replies, much appreciated. I haven't touched the wires yet. This is how it looked when I unplugged the aftermarket radio that was installed years ago (an owner or two before my time) |

I'm with Buildyourown. Stereos are not complicated wiring. Most Vanagons, or really any 30 year old vehicle, have been around throughout the years when car stereos went from simple to stupid complex (wiring) back to simple again nowadays. Old dashes have all sorts of boxes, doohickeys and widgets leftover from previous installs. Cut it out. Start back at zero. _________________ 86 Vanagon Westfalia 87k
